John Turner – Pearland High School - Executive Director

John Turner graduated from Lamar University in August of 1984; Assistant Coach at Friendswood High School – 1984-85; Head Coach @ Channelview High School - 1985-89; Record at Channelview – 110-38; State Finalists two years in a row – 88’ & 89’; Head Coach @ Baytown Lee High School - 1989-91’; Assistant Coach @ Lamar University - 1991-93’; Assistant Coach @ Alvin High School – 1993-94’; Head Coach @ Pearland High School – 1994-09’ – Record at Pearland High School – 352-163; Director of the Nations Largest High School Volleyball Tournament – Nike Volleyball Classic – 1997-2008; Coaches high school and collegiate volleyball for the past 24 years; Coached USAV Volleyball for 19 years; Has been named TGCA East All-Star Coach twice in his career – 1989’ & 2000’; All-Time Career Coaching Record: 508-217 (20 years); TGCA All-State Players: 8; TGCA East All-Star Players – 6; TGCA Academic All-State Players: 42; Coaches his team to District Championships: 8 out of 20 years; Coached his teams to the playoffs: 18 out of 20 years; Named Lone Star Region Coach of the Year for USAV: 1991; District Coach of the Year – 7 times for Districts 19-4A/22-5A/23-5A.
Coach Turner earned his 500th career win in 2008 against LaPorte HS. He joins an elite group of coaches throughout the state that have attained this honor.
Coach Turner has helped over 150 female and male athletes in high school and club volleyball with obtaining collegiate volleyball scholarships.

Ashley Earhart – Kingwood High School - President

Ashley Earhart is the Head Volleyball Coach at Kingwood School. Over the past four years, she has an overall record of 121-34, four district championships, and three district coach of the year awards. Ashley graduated from Kingwood High School where she played volleyball, basketball, soccer, and ran track. As a senior, she played in the 5A State Volleyball Tournament. After graduating from Kingwood, she continued her volleyball career at San Jacinto College. She was a 2-year Captain and was selected to the All Conference Team as well as several all tournament teams. As a junior, Coach Earhart transferred to Sam Houston State University where she completed her Bachelors of Arts in History. Recently, she was awarded her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

2000- 2010 Head Coach of the Bellaire Cardinals. District Coach of the Year every year. District Champions every year. Record – 336-58.

Dana Anderson – Travis High School - Vice President

Dana Anderson graduated from Snyder High School and went on to Texas Tech University to play volleyball on a Full Scholarship. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a second teaching field in Biology and Health. Her first teaching assignment was in Lubbock where she taught Life Science and coached volleyball and track for one year then moved to Katy where she taught for Physical Education 19 years. Dana was also the Head Volleyball coach, Assistant Track coach and Athletic Coordinator while in Katy. She moved to Travis when the school opened in 2006 and became the Head Volleyball coach and the Head Girl’s Track coach. She taught Biology at Travis for 3 years before moving to the Health and PE department. Dana is the Female Athletic Coordinator at Travis as well. She is married to her husband Jeff Anderson and has 2 daughters.

Becky Palermo – Stratford High School - Board Secretary

Becky Palermo played high school volleyball at Port Neches – Groves High School for Coach Barbara Comeaux. While in high school she was selected all-district, all-state, and East All-Star. Becky played college volleyball at Southwest Texas State and Stephen F. Austin University. Graduating from college, she began her coaching career at Northbrook High School in 1978. After 20 years at Northbrook, she began coaching at Stratford in 1998.

She has been successful in her coaching endeavors as indicated by the following accomplishments:

Debbie Jaehne - Cy-Creek High School - Board Member

Coach Jaehne is the Varsity Head Volleyball coach and Girls’ Golf Coach. Debbie has been coaching 31 years. She coached 2 years at Bleyl MS and this is her 29th year at Cy-Creek. Under her guidance the volleyball team has gone to the state tournament 8 straight years and won 3 State Championships. In 1989 Cypress Creek completed a 41 & 0 record (11th nationally); 1993 a 40 & 1 record (5th nationally) and in 1997 a 42 & 0 record (8th nationally). Debbie received bachelors degrees from Sam Houston State University in Physical Education and English, an M.Ed. from the University of Houston with and emphasis on exercise science. Coach Jaehne’s over all record is 814 and 161 and was Texas Girls’ Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1997. She is past president of the TGCA and is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Houston Volleyball Association. Coach Jaehne has coached a High Performance Team for USA volleyball and taken 8 teams to the Junior Olympics.

Leslie Madison - The Woodlands High School - Board Member

Leslie Madison is the Head Volleyball Coach at The Woodlands High School. As the coach of the Highlanders over the past six seasons she has compiled a 148-63 record, earned six consecutive playoff appearances, three district championships, three regional quarterfinalists, district and county Coach of the Year awards and has seen more than a dozen players go on to play college volleyball.
Leslie earned a full volleyball scholarship as a setter to Southern Methodist University where she still holds the all time assist record and was a three time team captain. In 2005 Leslie was inducted into the Cy Fair Athletic Hall of Fame where she was a graduate of in 1996. In high school Leslie was a three time all state selection, four time all district and all city player, and the Houston Chronicle Player of the Year as a senior.
Leslie is married to Lonnie Madison and has three children Mallory, Morgan and Case Madison.

Lori McLaughlin - Dawson High School - Board Member

Lori McLaughlin is a graduate of Putnam City North High School in Oklahoma City. In high school, she received numerous All Tournament Honors and was selected to the All State Team where she received MVP at the All State Game. She played collegiate volleyball for four years as a defensive specialist and on an occasion, left side hitter. The first two years were attended at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas and the last two years from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Lori started her teaching/coaching career in Katy ISD for nine years. She taught Physical Education and Health, and was the Head Volleyball/Assistant Track Coach at Mayde Creek High School. Lori also coached with Katy Juniors Volleyball Club for three years. Currently she is the Head Volleyball Coach and Girls’ Athletic Coordinator at Dawson High School in Pearland ISD. Dawson has only competed at the Varsity level for three years. In 2009 they were Regional Quarterfinalists, and 2010 Regional Semi-Finalists. Lori received 24-4A Co-District Coach of the year and Brazoria County Coach of the year in 2009, 24-4A District Coach of the year and rewarded the Nike Zoom Goddess of Victory Award in 2010. She has also seen over a dozen of her athletes go to the collegiate level. Lori is married to Mike McLaughlin and has two very active boys, Chase and Cole McLaughlin.

Christie Mewis - Klein Oak - Board Member

Coach Mewis is in her 13th year as a High School Coach and Teacher. She graduated from Katy High School where she played volleyball, basketball and softball. She then went to prestigious Texas A&M University, where she earned a degree in Kinesiology and Math. She returned home where she coached volleyball, basketball and softball, and taught math at Katy High. After two years she moved to California where she coached volleyball and softball and taught math at Corona High School. Strong family ties persuaded her to move back to Texas where she then joined the Klein ISD staff. Coach Mewis was first employed by Klein High where she was the assistant volleyball and basketball coach. She enjoyed her two years at KS, but saw an opportunity to move up and accepted the Head Volleyball Coaching position at Klein Oak in 2002. This is her 8th year as Head Volleyball coach, and she is excited about the 2008 season.

Scott Simonds - Clear Creek High School - Board Member

Scott Simonds played setter for the Texas A & M Men's Volleyball Team and was named all conference twice. He has been the Head Volleyball Coach at Clear Creek High School for 6 seasons and has accumulated a record of 172-68. He has won 4 District 24-5A Championships, coached his team to 4 trips to the Region III Tournament, and lead his team to the 2008 Region III Championship and 5A State Semi-Finals. Coach Simonds has been District 24-5A Coach of the Year 4 times, Galveston County Coach of the Year 4 times, and Houston area Coach of the Year once. Coach Simonds was the TGCA East All Star Coach in 2009. Coach Simonds has also started a successful boy's volleyball club team at Clear Creek High School. Coach
Simonds is married to his wife Shannon and has 2 children, son Cooper and daughter Bailey.

Debbie Sokol – Board Member

Debbie Sokol begins her 27th year as owner and director of one of the largest volleyball camps in the nation, Sokol Volleyball. She has played and coached at the collegiate, national and international levels. From 1982-1993, Sokol served as the head coach at Rice University. From 1993-2007, Sokol directed the very competitive and elite junior volleyball program, Club Texas. Currently Sokol presides over the volleyball program at The Kinkaid School in Houston and head coaches the varsity team.
Sokol began her playing career at Bellaire High School and took her talents to the University of Houston where she was team captain and MVP at both institutions. After college, Sokol was honored to become a member of the United States World University Games Team and traveled to Mexico City for the 1979 Games. She also participated in the Olympic Sports Festival that same year and won a bronze medal. Her next international experience came when she was selected to the USA World Maccabiah Games team in 1981. Her team traveled to Israel, and again as team captain, she led her squad to a Silver Medal finish in the finals.
Sokol returned home to begin her coaching career at Rice University and continued to play for several more years in the United States Volleyball Association, achieving National Rookie Team honors at USVBA Nationals. As the Rice Head Coach from 1982-1993, Sokol's teams accomplished great things, posting its first set of winning seasons and laying the foundation for a successful program. Her coaching peers unanimously named her the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1986.
Sokol has served professionally on the NCAA Division 1 All-America Committee, TAIAW Board of Directors and Club Texas Board of Directors. She is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and is CAP and IMPACT certified.

GHVCA COMMITTEES
 

1) All-Star Tournament Committee – Presiding Officer - President
This committee shall oversee the operations of the all-star event which will include the following: (a) event and practice set up; (b) reception set up for Friday night at practice facility; (c) officials for the event (d) concessions/t-shirt sales; (e) membership drive booth; (f) hospitality room for board and officials; (g) security; (h) financial statement through the book keeper for GHVCA; (I) collection of permanent uniform jerseys from each all-star team; (j) assist the president with any other issues regarding the event.

2) Membership Drive Committee – Presiding Officer - President
This committee shall oversee the membership drive portion of the GHVCA. The committee will be responsible for the following: (a) set up membership drives at the annual meeting/clinic in July and at the all-star tournament in January; (b) devise new approaches to enticing new members to the association; (c) set up payment methods for members on the web site working with the web hostess for the GHVCA web site (credit card payments); (d) Provide the president with a members log data base of their names, home addresses, cell numbers, school addresses, and their school and alternate e-mail addresses.

3) Sponsorship/ Media Relations/Web Site Committee – Presiding Officer – President
This committee shall oversee the acquisition of sponsors and the overall promotion of the GHVCA as an association. (a) the committee will seek out title sponsors (willing to donate $5,000.00 plus for the all-star tournament and also the annual meeting/clinic held in July; (b) the committee will seek out minor sponsors that will be willing to donate $2,000.00 or less for the all-star event and annual meeting/clinic; (c) the committee shall promote each annual event by soliciting local newspapers, television stations, web sites, and any other means of media promotions.

4) UIL Rules/Constitution Bylaws of GHVCA – Presiding Officer – Vice President
This committee shall participate in the operations and policy making of the UIL by inquiring all new policies regarding athletics each calendar year. The committee will address all new proposals by the UIL with the members through the GHVCA website by posting monthly updates regarding any new or changed policies. The committee will also address any GHVCA amendments to the Bylaws through the same means of communication on a monthly basis.
